Heron has been studying art since a child. After graduating from the Duke Ellington School of the arts, Heron furthered his studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art where he received a Bachelors degree in Illustration and masters in Digital Arts. Heron has taught art since 2003, beginning at Gibbs College teaching Special effects and 3D animation. With desires to expand his reach, Heron moved on to teach k-12 at a special Education school in DC. There he created his own Art department and became the program director of the Digital Arts Department. Heron is currently the illustrator for H.E.L.P. (Hip-Hop Educational Lyrics Program). The workbooks take the lyrics of popular Hip-Hop songs and use them to teach vocabulary and critical thinking. The program has been endorsed by President Obama and integrated in schools across America.

H.E.L.P. Covers and Illustrations

The workbooks take the lyrics of popular Hip-Hop songs and use them to teach vocabulary and critical thinking. The covers convey the message of the songs. The clip art can vary from a descriptive line in the song to an image associated with a lesson.

Rakim Drawnings

Illustrating the cover to this Rakim song allowed me to show the contrast between realism and mysticism. The Darkness of the ghetto can overshadow the light that shines from the stars and Rakim’s lyrics reflect that.

Pastel Drawings

I haven't worked with chalk pastel in 8 years. I just snatched a pic out a rap magazine...jus like I would have done 8 years ago. I was teaching a young man how to use chalk. The larger piece has both of our drawings in it, so it was a collaborative effort.

These drawings were completed early in the H.E.L.P. project. Using these as a starting point you can see my growth.

Kanye Drawings

I focused on trying to show the contrast between the large bush strokes and the line with this set of illustrations. I didn't want the crisp vector lines. I wanted them to feel organic.

Ghostface Drawings

With this set of illustrations I wanted to experiment with texture and contrast. The brush strokes are less deliberate. The line is more exact than before, but still organic. The use of the original photo in key areas creates a unique contrast against the illustration. Illustrating Ghostface allowed the chance for me to imagine what he would look like as a child and illustrate it. As a creative exercise it was challenging and empowering.

CD Covers

With every CD design I try to engage the listener before they ever hear a sound.

Art work for herongibran.com

These illustrations were animated for the headers of my web pages. I wanted each piece to feel different but unified.

Luda Pics

Ludacris’ lyrics are always so playful so I wanted to show him in a more serious light.

Stop the Violence

“Self Destruction” was my favorite song as a child. It was an honor and a pleasure to illustrate the lyrics for H.E.L.P.

Soulja Slim

I first heard Soulja Slim in college. I have been working on this piece for years. I would pick it up and paint everyday for a couple weeks, get it to a point where I like it, and paint over it the next year. I decided to record it one day. The final doesn’t look like this so it’s nice to have some record of the progress. I began mixing my colors. I think most people don’t spend enough time mixing colors and getting what they really see on their palette.
